Flu Trends - Can you predict the flu future?

If the world had known exactly what would happen during the H1N1 pandemic would we have reacted in a different way? 

It is extremely difficult to predict the future but by looking at the past you may identify trends that will add more clarity.

Google have found an interesting method for examining trends - through search terms.

They have created graphs that show historical query-based flu estimates for different countries and regions compared against official influenza surveillance data. As you can see, estimates based on Google search queries about flu are very closely matched to traditional flu activity indicators. Of course, as google says, past performance is no guarantee of future results.
